Tile Flooring: Vinyl vs. Linoleum
By ProMatcher Staff
Are vinyl and linoleum the same thing?
Although vinyl tile and linoleum tile are similar, they are not the same product. Vinyl is a synthetic product made from petroleum while linoleum is a natural product made from linseed oil and other materials. Both are very affordable when compared with other flooring options.
Vinyl Tile Flooring
The Good:
- Durable
- Very easy to install and maintain
- Waterproof
- Very affordable
- Quiet and comfortable
- Wide assortment of colors and patterns
The Bad:
- May dent, melt, or curl over time
- Can be damaged by sharp things
- Shorter lifespan than other flooring options
- Synthetic product, less environmentally friendly
- Fades after extended sun exposure
- May release some harmful fumes
- Cannot handle as much foot traffic as linoleum
The Bottom Line: Vinyl tiles are one of the most affordable flooring options. It is very easy to install and maintain. However, vinyl tiles will not last as long as linoleum and other tiles. After prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, the floor may become damaged. Vinyl tiles will not creak like wood and are very comfortable to walk on.

Linoleum Tile Flooring
The Good:
- Natural product, eco-friendly
- Handle heavy foot traffic well
- Low maintenance, easy to wipe clean
- Lasts longer than vinyl tile
The Bad:
- More expensive than vinyl tile
- More difficult to install than vinyl
- Vulnerable to water damage
- May need to be waxed or sealed periodically
- Less design options (colors and styles) available
- Can become yellow over time
The Bottom Line: Linoleum tiles are a little more expensive than vinyl tiles, but they will last longer and can handle much more foot traffic. However, linoleum is a little harder to find and there are fewer colors and styles available. It is more vulnerable to water and moisture damage than vinyl and it may yellow after many years of use.
